Hello!

Hope you don’t mind me jumping on to ask a quick question 😊 I really don’t know much about Premium Bonds but they have been suggested to me as somewhere to put my sons savings. He’s 3yo currently and has £7k sitting in a bank account. He gets 3.11% interest on £4999 and 1.44% beyond that.

Theres no guarantees with wins on PBs, I know. And I’m assuming you don’t earn any interest and they just hold their value? Are they easy enough to cash out at any point should he want to? Is there a minimum amount to invest? Eg, if family give him £20/30/50 etc, is it easy enough just to add in to his PBs or are you buying them in like £100+ per time?

And what’s best to do - buy in his name? Do I then just deal with it as his guardian? Or do you hold them in your name but know it’s for your kids? If that makes sense?

Sorry for the silly Qs 😊 I need a beginners lesson! Lol.

I wouldn’t use PBs for your son. Have you considered a S&S JISA so his savings aren’t eroded by inflation? My son’s is up around 12% this year. By the time your 3 year old is 18 the 7K should have gone up by quite a bit and there’s time to ride out the ups and downs

Inyourwildestdreams · 26/12/2023 17:14

@Kaltenzahn Thank you! Really helpful 😊

@WeAreBorg We actually have a S&S JISA for him that DH and I contribute to already.

This £7k is separate and is made up of money gifted when he was born to “get something he needs”, birthday/Christmas money, and a few thousand from a grandparent to “do something with for him”.
There’s absolutely nothing he needs etc just now but I would like the money to be accessible (happy to wait a couple of weeks for it if necessary) if there are things he wants as he gets older. I just wondered if PB might be with taking a chance with in the mean time!

1975wasthebest · 26/12/2023 17:27

Go for it with PB’s @Inyourwildestdreams the fun aspect of it makes it worthwhile for me for now and I have a similar amount saved. The average return on PB’s is 4.65 % but that depends on you having average luck.

Ah yes that makes sense if you need it to be accessible. I was also going to suggest putting it in his junior SIPP but I’m way off track here 😂

Thingsthatgo · 26/12/2023 21:18

I have a question! I have just moved some savings into premium bonds... says eligible from 1st February, does that mean I'm in time for thedraw at the beginning of February? Or am I eligible for the next one? Thank you.

1975wasthebest · 26/12/2023 21:25

Yes @Thingsthatgo your PB’s are eligible for the February draw. Good luck and I hope you enjoy being part of this thread - it’s good fun and it can be very interesting seeing what other people win!

Carpediem15 · 26/12/2023 21:34

It wasn't fun for me last month - £50,000 holdings and didn't win anything, better not be like that next week or I will do some foot stamping. It was the first time ever I have not won anything and I was absolutely furious. 😱

@WeAreBorg 😂 Definitely not with this money 😊 but thanks for the reminder - I keep meaning to look into pensions for him. I didn’t grow up in a financially stable house and reached adulthood knowing nothing about finances/savings/investments etc so I’m trying to learn and do what I can for my DC 😅

I also won nothing on FH last month. I will be fuming if I get nothing again!

We’re away at the moment so I hope Agent Million will leave a “we called but you weren’t in” card for when we get home late on 30th 😜

boatgirl81 · 29/12/2023 10:15

I know we all could do with it but I would really love that knock at the door today. Would put some New Year's resolution into immediate effect, better work life balance for a start.

1975wasthebest · 29/12/2023 10:30

I kind of wish there wasn’t a bank holiday on Monday - more time to wait until results are published on Tuesday.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/12/2023 18:30

Yep long wait now

No knock for me

hopingforthemillion · 29/12/2023 20:11

nor me! A big win would be nice to help get through statutory maternity pay 🧐

Daffyyellow · 29/12/2023 20:54

No knock here either. Couldn’t have let them in anyway, Covid!

Daffyyellow · 29/12/2023 20:54

🤞🏻for Tuesday and Wednesday. Good luck everyone.

Becky2023 · 29/12/2023 21:05

I think Agent Millionaire visits day before first working day of month. They visit at weekends too.

Wrapunzel · 29/12/2023 21:22

I've paid in an extra £12k this week so takes me to £22k for February's draw. Aim is for full holdings!

Happiestathome · 29/12/2023 21:37

Just topped ours up for February too. I think it’s going to be a good few years before we get back to full holdings due to other projects, but it’s definitely an aim of mine

Mindymomo · 30/12/2023 08:19

DH and I only won £25 each Dec draw on almost full holdings. Will see what we get in next months draw.

This is how I understand it too. Holding out for a knock on New Year’s Day, the day before the first working day of the month.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/12/2023 12:52

So there still hope ?
