Sending money to oz

I think I've posted in the wrong place but wasn't too sure on where I should actually post.
It's my friends child's birthday who lives in oz. It's completely slipped my mind and now nothing will get there in time. Does anyone know of anything I could send online that would get there in time or a voucher of some kind? I used to use book depository but they've stopped now. I'm also skint so can only really afford about £10.

Could you PayPal some money to your friend and ask her to buy her child a present on your behalf?

chuffachuffchuff · 17/11/2023 08:06

Ooh that's a good idea!!

www.amazon.com.au would solve the problem for you. In effect you open an Australian account which is linked to your UK one. Prices are in AUD and delivery is swift (although not always as quick as we have here).

chickenpieandchips · 17/11/2023 10:43

I use wise. Just need their bank details. You pay a small commission.

chuffachuffchuff · 17/11/2023 13:47

I never thought of amazon

Etsy deliver to Aus as well. Just set the shop location to Australia and there'll be loads :)

I never thought of amazon

Relevant Amazon sites useful for European countries, to avoid duty payable on incoming gifts from UK !

Whereabouts in Oz? I have family in Sydney, and I've arranged for vouchers from a couple of bookshops and also a toy shop - they send them as an email so easy to pass on

willyconker · 17/11/2023 21:08

She's in Melbourne. I think sending money might be the best option

BIWI · 18/11/2023 08:05

I wouldn't, really - firstly you'll have to pay commission (assuming you're sending Australian dollars?) which will eat into your £10) and second, there's always a risk sending money in the post.

Buying digital vouchers is really easy, and I'm sure there are plenty of places in Melbourne that will sell those.

willyconker · 18/11/2023 18:01

How do I send a digital voucher? @BIWI as in one through Amazon?

BIWI · 18/11/2023 18:24

No - you need to find the store you want to buy from, and do it from their website.

For Sydney, I just searched for book shops, or toy shops, and then went to their website.

BIWI · 18/11/2023 18:26

Do you have a credit card that doesn't charge commission - like the Halifax Clarity one?

Porridgeislife · 18/11/2023 18:28

Booktopia is a good Australian bookstore that sells online & has instant delivery for gift certificates.

When you send a voucher it asks how much oz dollars you want to send. So if I put in say 15 dollars, how will that take it out of my bank account? Will I have to pay anything extra?

willyconker · 19/11/2023 08:17

I don't have a credit card

willyconker · 19/11/2023 20:43

@BIWI dymocks looks good to send a voucher from. When you go to pay can you just pay like
Normal and they exchange the uk pound into oz dollars? Is that how it works? Will I have an extra charge for exchanging into a different currency?

BIWI · 20/11/2023 09:39

Yes, you'll be charged an exchange rate for the transaction. (It won't be very much though, if you're only sending £10)

TerfTalking · 20/11/2023 09:41

I'm late to this, but I PayPal my bestie in Australia a couple of times a year, works well.

BobShark · 20/11/2023 09:41

I can second Amazon.com.au
You can do same day delivery. I'm Brit in Oz and do the same thing in reverse to the uk. Just need an Aussie account

willyconker · 20/11/2023 14:12

Thanks all 🥰

watchingsmurfs · 21/11/2023 19:30

Amazon, Etsy, Next (Australian site), Myer

willyconker · 18/12/2023 14:51

As you were all so fantastic before, my mom wants to send my teen cousins a voucher to oz. I did dymocks for my friends present and it was really easy! They're teenagers so might want to buy clothes or accessories etc. any ideas of any shops she could get a voucher for? Thanks everyone
