HELP. Has anyone received housing benefit when they already own a house?????

H and I split up 7 months ago, and have still been living together under very strained and stressful conditions. The council (who will not rehouse me) said that I should receive housing benefit if I rent a property and move out, but the more I think about it the more absurd this sounds and I doubt they will based on what friends receive.

I'm looking at the first suitable place I could move to for the last seven months tomorrow, but really need housing benefit to be able to afford it. What are my chances?

You can get housing benefit to pay the interest on the first £100k of y our mortgage, but it doesn't kick in for several months after you make your claim.

You need to apply pronto to your local authority. Not sure how skint you have to be to qualify.

I split up with my husband four years ago. He kindly changed the locks on the doors on me and my baby and as he was a violetn individual I wasn't going to push it. We were both named on the mortgage. I tried to register as homeless but the council would not help me out. In the end I did rent a property and they paid a large portion of the rent in housing benefit. However, it did take a long time to kick in. YOu need to take yourself down there and find out what you are entitled too.

Help with paying interest on your mortgage is different to housing benefit.

You are correct in thinking you cant claim HB if you already own a property. However their are a few exceptions ie leaving due to violence.

Is there a reason why you cant stay in the house or is it up for sale?
