Avanti Trains (Pending charges for "failed" transactions)

Has anyone had an issue with Avanti West Coast?

There booking system seems to have an occasional annoying glitch, where you will try buy tickets (lets say worth £200), and the payment will "fail" but £200 will be pending on your account. The payment does eventually clear and gets cancelled (depending on bank, circa 5-10 days), but it leaves you out of pocket for that time.

Avanti's response is really poor, essentially saying that it may have happened because the page refreshed at the wrong time (does not seem to affect other payments). And from a glance online it looks as though it has happened to several other people who have sometimes complained via Twitter.

It is quite concerning, because although the money does eventually get returned if it falls the same week as a bill being due it could leave you in real trouble. Moreover, if you try the payment again (as many would), it can actually leave multiple payments "ring-fenced").

Is it Avanti's problem or your banks?

I would say Avanti, given it does not seem to occur with other vendors and it's happened to multiple customers.
