income-based ESA and paying into a pension

I've never worked so have never paid into a pension, I'm mid-40s. I'm currently on income-based ESA, can/should I pay into a private pension whilst on ESA, or would the pension be taken into account when claiming ESA? How do I go about a private pension?

ESA is your money and if you can afford to put a few bob a week into a pension then that's your business. Money in pensions is not capital for benefits purposes.
