Car insurance named driver to main

Hi

I don’t know if this is the right place to post this but I wasn’t sure where to.

Im after some advice. Up until very recently - like Saturday - my husband and I shared our car. He is the policy holder and main driver and I am a named driver , as he did most of the driving ( I much prefer being a passenger ! ) . However, he has just got a new job that includes a car, so that will now be his car and our car will pretty much be mine, I’ve also secured a new job that I will need the car for and on weekends etc we will use his car ( it’s a lot nicer and brand new so he will certainly not want to be driving our little car!! Men 🤣 ) so he won’t be driving our car at all , therefore we obviously now need to change the insurance so that it’s all above board …. Does anyone know how this works? Will it simply be a case of calling the company and telling them and they will just make me the main driver instead or will I have to start again , and will there be a deposit to be paid when we make that change like you have to pay when you get a new policy ?

He has said he will sort it all out this weekend , so I don’t really need to be seeking information like this but I’m a little worried as , financially , we could do without having to pay a few hundred pounds deposit this week!

Also, does anyone know how it works with NCD ? On the car , our car that’s now going to be mine , there is 4 years NCD , I believe he may be ‘using’ that for his new insurance ( this will teach me not to listen when he tells me things as I’m a bit confused 🤣)as he asked me to look how much we had and then said we need to change it this week as his new company for business insurance needs it and he can’t use it if he’s still on our car. Does this mean I’m going to start with 0 NCD ?

Thank you in advance x

Why don’t you just ring the insurance company as you will be the person insured. You will have to think about whether he is to be totally removed from the policy or you just swap the main driver. Your insurance may increase, especially if you have no NCD or are a young and inexperienced driver. It may be worth comparing prices again as what was best with your DH may not be the best deal for you. If he is getting a company car why doesn’t he try to leave the NCD with you?

If he is taking the NCD with him you will have to start yourself. However some companies will give you a year or so as you have been a named driver

Just shop around

The NCD belongs to the policyholder who is usually also the main driver. It doesn't belong to the car. If you are lucky the current insurer will give you a discount for having been a named driver but it's unlikely to be the full amount if anything.

And as an aside it's the policyholder who loses their NCD if a named driver causes a claim as I discovered when exH had a prang in my car.
