Bank account fraud!

asblackasyoursoul · 26/03/2023 20:07

Never had this happen to me before but was alerted by text to dodgy transactions. Went on my bank app and sure enough money had been taken. Got the account blocked but as it’s Sunday evening the fraud team is only 9-5, so all the guy was able to do was block my card.

I’ve never had this happen to me before so I’m freaking out a bit. It was £50 each time taken totalling about £200.
Going to call the fraud team first thing tomorrow. I’ve no idea how this has happened! And I’m worried as I’ve got payments due out on Tuesday and what if they aren’t able to take them if my account is still blocked?
I’ll obviously be getting a new card but does this mean I need to re set up all my direct debits etc?

Thanks to anyone who reads, just having a bit of a panic!

I’m also praying I will be getting the money back?! 😕

A new card won't mean you have to set up your Direct Debits again.

As your bank itself recognised the transactions as fraud, hopefully they should be able to refund you quickly.

I expect the fraud team will be able to give more information about how it happened and any action you need to take - I hope you can get it all sorted out tomorrow.

Have you changed the password on your account and the 3 digit code?

bigbluebus · 26/03/2023 20:33

If they were card transactions then it's likely the bank have only blocked your card. The rest of the account will continue to function as normal as long as you have funds left to cover the direct debits. We had a fraudulent card transaction on our joint account in December. It was on DHs card (we think the card had been skimmed). The Bank blocked DHs card and ordered him a new one. My card continued to work as normal and all other payments carried on as normal. We had the refund of the fraudulent transaction the same day.

Thanks guys. I have changed my bank password also yep. Oh really, I would have thought no direct debits would be able to come out if the card is blocked?

Are the direct debits set up on you bank account or are they continuous payments set up on your bank card? If the former then they should carry on but if they're set up as payments on the card then they will stop as the card is cancelled.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 27/03/2023 04:41

Direct debits are linked to your bank account and are completely separate to your debit card so shouldn't be affected.

How was the money taken from your account? Were these bank transfers or card payments? Who were the payments made to?

asblackasyoursoul · 28/03/2023 18:15

Thanks all for your replies. Called the bank yesterday and got it all sorted. The payments have been taken out to a Monzo bank account with Eastern sounding names.
They said they’d pass it over to a fraud investigator and they’d get me my money back but so far haven’t gotten anything. Also still don’t have my new bank card, does anyone know how long that’s likely to take? 😞

When you ring to cancel the card they ask when your last transaction was. If there's anything suspicious it will be flagged up.
