Will this have destroyed my credit rating?

I have never in my life paid a bill late, not paid a fine or fallen behind on any payment. My credit cards have been paid off in full each month and I’m generally very careful with money. I’m hoping to open a business in the summer and have saved around £30k to do this which I will need to use in full plus borrowing another £20k for which I have an agreement in principle.

But I’ve just opened a letter to find I have reviewed a claim form from a county court business centre for £250. I moved house 2 years ago and set up a Mail redirect for a year. From what I can gather Sky was trying to bill me after I cancelled the Direct Debit but they didn’t start sending letters until after the year long mail redirect was expired. This then escalated to a collection company and they then escalated it to a county court who found my correct address and posted information to me here. I opened it yesterday and paid it straight away. I remember at the time having a nightmare cancelling Sky as I couldn’t get through to anyone so I just cancelled the direct debit and figured if they chased me I could at least talk to someone about how to do properly. But then life carried on and I completely forgot about it 😭.

It’s not so much the money. It’s annoying but it’s probably my fault and I don’t know why they wouldn’t have just emailed me rather than posting letters over a year after I cancelled but I’m more concerned about my credit rating and whether this has now ruined my dreams of opening my business. I don’t want to do a credit check as I did one relatively recently and have been told doing credit checks on yourself lowers your score. Any ideas? It didn’t actually go to a CCJ, it was a letter from the County Court saying that it would if it wasn’t paid within 14 days.

I would think if you haven't got a ccj from it it should be ok. It may have put a late payment on your file but now you've paid it, it should be altered to satisfied.

Just check your credit report, it does not damage your credit rating if you sign up to check your credit file.
