Being charged twice for supermarket shop

Has this happened to anyone else? Who would be my first port of call? The supermarket or my bank?
Paid for my weekly shop this weekend inserted my chip and pin card but was told the payment hadn't gone through so did it a second time. Looked tonight on my statement and I have actually been charged twice. I've also stupidly thrown my receipt away. Who do I dispute it with?

Has it actually come out twice or are they showing as pending?

Has it actually gone through or is it pending in your account? I'd wait until tomorrow to see if you have actually been charged twice.

I’ve had this happen, and I spoke to my bank and they could very obviously see what was happened and one was quickly reversed. (I didn’t need a receipt or anything). Check in the morning to see if it has gone through (vs being pending). Don’t panic!

@THNG5 Thank you. I have just checked and they are both pending. I will call my bank tomorrow.

Likely only one will clear- but yes any issues just call the bank

@InsertUsernameHere Ahh that is good to know. I will call my bank in the morning. It is quite obvious I think too what has happened. Unfortunately it wasn't for a small amount so I hope it can be resolved also. Thank you!

I think it should be straightforward. Neither your bank or the supermarket will think you should be charged twice within mere seconds of each instance for the exact same amount and in the same location. Also, supermarkets keep electronic copies of your receipts so that there is an audit trail.

No need to do anything if its pending. Only one lot will actually be taken.

The only issue with 2 being pending is that it affects the balance available to you. If the 2nd one remains pending after the money comes out then that's when you need to speak to the bank.

Thank you for everyone's reassurance, I just thought I would update in case it happens to anyone else.

Called the bank first thing this morning and they did not hesitate to reverse one of the charges. However, because both were authorised my me through my pin both still could be charged, in the case that they are I am to contact them again to raise a dispute.

At the same time they advised to contact the supermarket which I have just done and they have said that if the transaction does go through to go to the store where i made the purchase and the customer service will issue me with a full refund.

Excellent service from both this morning.
