Cashing a cheque when you only have an online account

Surreality22 · 08/10/2022 06:54

My husband received a tax rebate, however he only has a Monzo account. How would he go about cashing it?

We don't have a shared bank account (we're separating) and I'm assuming I can't put it in my own account and transfer it over even if he came with me as it's not my name on the cheque.

Any ideas? Thanks

Monzo must have a way of dealing with cheques! You need to ask them.

Search Google

is there a paying in option on his account? I bank with Lloyds and in their app I can pay in a cheque without having to go to a bank. I have to enter the amount and then upload a photo of the front and the back (goodness knows why, the back is always blank!). Then just keep the cheque in case there is an issue.

Surreality22 · 08/10/2022 07:01

Oh cool thanks! I'll send that to him.

No idea about paying in option. Sending it to Monzo sounds best.

I don't think cashing a cheque is even possible nowadays and it certainly won't be with an onlin back as there wouldnt be any way to get the cash

Have you tried speaking to the tax office?

LilithImpala67 · 08/10/2022 07:03

You can pay a cheque on with Monzo. Details in their app help section.

Op wants to pay it in...not "cash it"

Monkeytapper · 08/10/2022 07:05

With natwest you can cash a cheque by scanning it on phone, do t even have to go near a bank and can throw cheque away once credited

Singleandproud · 08/10/2022 07:09

I pay in online by taking a photo of the cheque on the app. My tax rebate one had to go in via the Post Office as the font was too small for it to be processed properly.

Yep, thats it. I have a monzo account. You post the cheque into them.

If you ever want to pay in cash, you for to any shop with a 'pay point' facility (where you can pay bills) and hand it over with your card there. It's in your account in 15 mins.

Not initially as the title and OP are quite clear about what she wanted to do but I do see that she typed a reply while I was typing mine where she acknowledges that paying it mght be an optiopn

Lots of banks now let you pay in a cheque by uploading a photo of it. Seems strange that a modern bank like Monzo doesn't offer such a facility. I can do this in my Starling account, which is pretty much the same thing.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/10/2022 08:45

In fact it would probably be quicker for him to open a starling account and upload the cheque to them than it would for him to post to monzo for them to deal with in 5 to 7 days.

ThisIsNotAFlyingToy · 08/10/2022 11:30

Barclays let you upload a photo but it is so glitchy it was easier for me to open a Starling account and do the same there.

AriettyHomily · 08/10/2022 12:01

My great aunt always send me a cheque for my birthday. I send it free post to Monzo and it clears in a couple of days.

somewhereovertherain · 09/10/2022 10:52

Most banks phone app for small amounts up to £500 or you can usually pay in at the post office.
dont know if that works for monzo though if

Surreality22 · 09/10/2022 16:37

Thanks everyone, I sent him the Monzo info link he's not said anything yet so not sure if he's read it.
