I'm in court today, positive thoughts please

I'm in court today because the council say i owe them council tax. I have been to the c.a.b and shown them a letter saying that from April 07 - March 08 the amount of council tax due is £0 which is why i didn't think i needed to pay anything. The c.a.b have given me a print out of my incomings and outgoings which clearly shows that i have -£198 once my bills are paid. I am very nervous and don't know what to expect. I am just about to leave, not looking forward to this at all

I've just got home. It was very busy and everyone seemed to have the same appointment time. They think that they have overpaid me council tax benefit over the last year and want it back although they said it was obvious i couldn't afford to pay. She said my best option was to let it go back to court and try to get the debt wiped although this means debt collectors would be round at my house. She said they have no legal right to enter my house tho. What a mess!

Well done for getting through the court appearance, take it bit by bit and see if the CAB can liaise with the courts on your behalf. They know all the jargon and what it will actually mean to you. They will also advise you on your rights, especially regarding debt collectors as the laws governing these are different for council tax issues compared with other debts. Also see if you can look at the timescale involved and also, if you can make token payments, these can be as much as you can personally afford, if I remember correctly. It shows you are willing to pay something, even if it is £1.

Hang on in there and you will get through it.
