It's just not possible to live without a debit card, annoyingly.

I lost my debit card, couldn't find it. Froze it and ordered a new one.
Then I got weird messages from my bank to ask me if I'd authorised payments to loan companies, phone companies and Microsoft. No, I hadn't. Turns out my new debit card has probably been stolen en route to my house. So in total I will have been without a debit card for 2 weeks. What a bloody nightmare it's been. I don't have another debit card or credit card to fall back on.

  1. I can't put fuel in my car in the middle of the night when doing an emergency hospital run. 7 miles left in the tank once I'd left A&E and the only 3 petrol stations in the area are pay at the pump. Thank heavens for the AA.
  2. I can't pay cash in most tourist shops in London. Went to London for a day trip, took plenty of cash and couldn't use it to pay for souvenirs in 2 well known tourist gift shops, that really would me up. DS had his pocket money to spend and wasn't allowed to spend it.
  3. Today I can't bloody pay for my DS's school dinners for next week, because their website only take debit or credit cards. I've requested bank details so I can do a bank transfer hopefully.

What the hell is the world coming to?
Since I lost my debit card I have started budgeting my cash into envelopes for bills, car, food etc. Now I'm thinking there's no point because I can't fill up the car using cash when I want to use cash.
I realise I'm probably ranting and it just takes a bit more planning but I'm so annoyed with the world that I have to use a piece of plastic everywhere I go. Does anyone else feel the same?

Can you not add it to your phone wallet for back up?

I don't know, I'll look into it, I'm not tech savvy with the banking stuff and need someone to show me. Knowing me I'd loose my phone too, so I'm screwed 😆

I had to ask for a new card as I thought my details had been compromised. My bank advised me of the new card details before I got the physical card, so I was able to add it to Apple Pay and also use it for online transactions.
If your bank hasn't advised you similarly, phone and ask them for the card details so you're not completely stuck until you receive it.

SuperAsymmetry · 06/09/2022 22:19

Adding it to phone wouldn't help as it's been cancelled

Luredbyapomegranate · 06/09/2022 22:21

Set up a second account so you gave a back up card.

monzo accounts are good for putting money into different pots

gingertoast · 06/09/2022 22:21

Credit card for back up?

SausagePourHomme · 06/09/2022 22:22

I think you can buy a prepay mastercard at sainsburys, not certain though

I have never heard anyone used ‘advised’ rather than told, outside of corporate speak

<misses point>

Threelittlelambs · 06/09/2022 22:29

I have two bank accounts also have them both in my phone.

Good back ups and you would’ve seen the transactions sooner.

Valid8me · 06/09/2022 22:35

It's very inconvenient but as others have already said, most people have more than one debit/ credit card so there is always a backup.

I'll look into the pre payment credit card as mentioned above so this never happens again.

But the point that I want to use cash is being missed.

@Luredbyapomegranate, yes, you totally missed the point.
I used the term advised because it isn't grammatically incorrect unless you wish to tell me differently?

At the risk of sounding harsh, a lot of these issues wouldn't have occurred if you'd had a second card. As well as loss, the system also goes down every once in while, so a second card with another bank is a basic contingency plan.

Also if you want cash to be your back up, you need to keep a decent chunk (£200 at least?) in your house, so you can buy petrol, groceries and other essentials for the few days it takes for your card to be replaced. Or you need to be with Natwest? who allow you to take cash out a machine without a card.

Cash can be lost and when it's gone, it's almost certainly gone. At least if you lose a card, you can freeze or cancel it and your money is safe.

vipersnest1 · 06/09/2022 22:48

And, @Luredbyapomegranate, I know this is AIBU, but that's doesn't mean you need to try to hand every poster their arse in a plate.....
Sorry, @BarbaraofSeville, I hope I haven't derailed your thread. Flowers

Imsupertangirl · 06/09/2022 22:48

I have apple pay on my phone now. Never know where my debit card is! Just tap and go, it’s contactless.

vipersnest1 · 06/09/2022 22:48

Oh, hell, the last post was aimed at @Anonymousmam, sorry!

RaininSummer · 06/09/2022 22:51

I have a back up credit card as it is nightmare when your card is lost. Am intrigued as to what a phone wallet is. Can anyone explain please?

Fiddlersgreen · 06/09/2022 22:53

We were at the airport going on holiday when my husband got a text from his bank to authorise a transaction that he hadn’t made.
he called the bank and they had to cancel his card as they believed it had been cloned, he has no other cards or accounts. If I hadn’t been with him, he’d have had no access to any money whilst on holiday

TheClitterati · 06/09/2022 22:57

I lost my debit card recently- it is a pain.

But life was so much easier as I had it saved in my Apple wallet. I could keep using Apple Pay even though the debit card was cancelled. My new debit card was automatically loaded into Apple Pay when it was issued.

For cash I had to raid kids piggy banks or go to the bank.

Onehappymam · 06/09/2022 23:00

I’m going through the same thing right now OP! I remember when a new bank card would take a couple of days. Feels like it’s taking forever! I live rurally, so nowhere near a bank to withdraw cash.

I’ve been transferring money to friends and getting cash from them via the cash machine. They must be sick fed up of me!

It’s unfortunate that I lost two debit cards and a credit card at the same time.

Untwist your knickers, it was an observation. It’s probably entering the language, like gifted.. regrettable as it may be.

vipersnest1 · 06/09/2022 23:10

@Luredbyapomegranate, so I'm not incorrect then?
So maybe you shouldn't have picked my post apart in the first place.
Apologies again to @Anonymousmam.

LittleBearPad · 06/09/2022 23:20

Just get a credit card as an alternate.

It’s not phrasing I’ve heard outside of corporate speak no, which is what I said.

It’s an observation. Chill.

I'm not sure if you have misunderstood but I didn't mean add it now after it's been cancelled,
I was thinking of future use.
