17 year old and apprenticeship/universal credit

Hi everyone.

My 17 year is about to start an apprenticeship. He has a 4 week trial. I receive universal credit but am confused as to whether his apprenticeship will affect the amount i receive, online it says he is still classed as a dependant as its further education or approved training is this correct? He will in no way be able to give me board or anything from his small wage so i am abit worried ( although very happy for him also)

From what I recall no non dependant deduction for under 21s on UC.

If he is being paid wages then he will come off your claim. I think there are only some apprenticeships that are more college based where this doesn't apply. If he is your only child on the claim then you would lose the child element and your work allowance. There is no non dependent deduction from your rent element ( if you rent) until he turns 21.

Can i add him back on again if he doesn't get taken on after the 4 weeks? He would be going back to school if that happened

I think it would be best to perhaps wait and see if it works out before taking him off your claim. Perhaps ask on your journal.

I did think about waiting but then i also don't want to get into trouble for fraud?

I would perhaps leave a message on your journal asking what to do. It's an unusual situation. You need to be sure he can be added back on. I don't think there would be a problem adding him back on again.
