I feel so sad having to think about things like this but my mum is struggling both emotionally and financially.

My Stepfather passed away this year, my mother has received a payment to her bank account with no letter outlining what this was for. I contacted his company for some clarification on what this money was-they have said 1 years salary, he worked for this company for over 25 years, is this the norm?

also he was enrolled in the work pension - what happens to this?

1 year’s salary sounds on the low side - I’d expect a multiple of basic salary (usually 3 or 4 times). Workplace pension depends on the scheme. Has nobody been in touch with your mum? Wherever I’ve worked the HR team would handle this, and a specialist team in a bigger company.

Did sf have any employment paperwork or handbook? Death in service benefit may increase over time and pension may depend on who was his nominated beneficiary. The pension may be managed externally so details would follow once the company notifies them.

Apart from a card with a letter of condolence- nothing. When I contacted his actual place of work to tell them that he had died, his colleague I spoke to said head office would be in touch in a few weeks and that they would need a copy of his death certificate to deal with his insurance.

after 2 months of nothing I contacted his head office and they said there had been a mix up and they thought we had been made aware of what we needed to do.

I don’t think my mum could find anything relating to his contract

I’m surprised you have had a payment without providing the death certificate. I think there’s been a mix up - I’d get in touch with his branch and ask for the details for the head office team.

They have been provided with a copy of his death certificate
