Council Tax rebanding

When buying a property is the council tax band always changed to a higher band after sale?

Don't think so, never heard of that before.

Sometimes it is, only if there has been improvements such as an extra bedroom added. The property is flagged when building work has been completed to flag up at the change of owner

I think it happens if there is a large increase in the value of the property, but I am not sure. I just wanted other peoples views on this.

If it's been flagged for rebanding yes. If it hasn't, no.

Quite straightforward! Check if listed or not.

The council rebanded a house that I bought because the previous owner had added an extension. Although I successfully appealed the decision and it was put back into the original band.

It happened on this house- I had a bit of a shock when the CT bill came through!

A property I bought had been marked for re-banding on sale, however the alterations didn't warrant a band increase.

It would depend why it is marked for re-banding, usually triggered by planning/building control applications. ie if they add a bedroom then it is more than likely going to increase, if there are large extensions downstairs then again possible increase. If they just extended the kitchen or added a conservatory then probably not. I used to work in council tax. You can check the VOA (Valuation Office) website to see the council tax bands for the properties in the road and see if there is a re-banding marker against the property you wish to buy or have bought.

Occasionally people extend etc without having building regs and so that would be flagged up on the price the property is sold for. We also had some sold under their value too, that also red flags the VOA.
