When can I lock in a new mortgage rate?

First time buyer here. Renewing my mortgage for the first time this year as my fixed period comes to an end.

Renewal is due November.

How soon can I lock in a new rate? Should I do it sooner rather than later as the interest rates will only go higher this year, right?

Do you have to pay a fee to switch to another lender at the end of a fixed period?

My mortgage provider said anytime from 6 months before the end of the fixed period. You'll need to mention when you need it from though, in case other banks differ.

I don't believe you have to pay to exit a mortgage once the fixed period is up, although there are often fees to pay when setting up a remortgage.
