Can anyone who's switched to internet banking help me?

I assumed they dealt with everything, but they've just asked me to transfer some money to the new account so as to avoid bank charges if any direct debits are taken out. I've tried to do this and it doesn't seem possible, something about it taking 10 days to arrange a one off direct debit.
Is there some other way I can transfer money like sending them a cheque?
Secondly, I know they are switching my direct debits, but what about money that's paid into my account like child benefit, do I need to organise that myself?

Can you not do a one off transfer from your existing account

You should just need the new account number & sort code & it should take 3-5 working days

Child benefit - you can do on-line

Thanks Katymac, that should have been obvious to me!
