dd1 had an outfit as a gift for Christmas from Next

anyway it is too small ,as it was bought by an ex collegue of mine who very kindly never forgets to buy for the dd's but whom we rarely see socially.

I asked my mom to return it for me today for a voucher or replacement and she was told that they would only fund a voucher to sale price as it has now gone in the sale
There was nothing in store that my mom could exchange it for .

Can they actually do this ?

It seems a shame to only have the sale value as it was given as a gift and bought for full price.
I couldn't ask my friend if she has receipt as i would hate to upset her and like i said we rarely see her.

I think they can do this if you haven't got the receipt.

Can you not ask the friend for the receipt as "DD1 has had a growth spurt and you would like to swap it for a bigger size"?

LadyOfTheHollyAndTheIvy · 28/12/2007 22:45

Sounds like a typically shite thing shite next do to be honest.
Robbing bastards.

WendyWeber · 28/12/2007 22:48

They have to do this because some people buy things in the sale and then try to return them for a full price refund (robbing bastards )

You will have to ask your friend for the receipt, but as it is too small you have a genuine reason to ask and no need to feel bad about it.

SpacecadetLovesChristmas · 28/12/2007 22:49

unfortunately they will only refund to the current value the item is for sale at..all shops do this..unless you have the receipt, then you will get the pre sale price

Bluenosesaint · 28/12/2007 22:50

Next give out 'gift receipts' with their goods sold before xmas, could you ask the giver of the gift if s/he was given a gift receipt so that you could get the full amount of the gift? The gift receipt doesn't have the amount on for you to see so no embarrassment there.

Or try a different shop if its feasible, to see if they stock the larger size of the item - that way it is irrelevant how much the item cost ...

Maidamess · 28/12/2007 22:50

I'm sure Next put a mark on the label in indelible red ink to show it has been reduced (well they did when I worked there)

So if your item does not have a red mark, it was purchased at the full price, which is what you should get.

Check whether they still mark their reductions before you say this though!!

XmastimePelvicfloorsandWine · 28/12/2007 22:50

It is really annoying and unfair if that is the case.

hmm not sure if could ask friend for receipt as she bought her an outfit for her birthday in November and i exchanged that as it was too small and didn't tell my friend. She will think it a bit odd for her to grow that much in a month.

Unfortunately that is standard practice without the receipt.

My mum got gift receipts when she bought stuff from Next which means I can exchange them for the full value (bless her she thinks I've lost weight and am a size 10 not a 12). These don't have the price printed on but the staff can tell what price the gift has been purchased at.

I'm sure your friend won't be upset if you say it is too small and explain the problem.

XmastimePelvicfloorsandWine · 28/12/2007 22:52

There are no red sale marks on the labels.

so i think that i shall have to be honest with my friend.

Thanks for the replies

My trouble is i worry about upsetting people too much.

Next are perfectly within their rights to say that - as someone else said, there are people out there who buy stuff at a reduced price and and try to get a full price refund.

You're best bet, if you don't want to ask for the receipt, is to try and find the same item in the size you want, and ask to do an exchange - I'd imagine this would be fine.

Remember, unless the item is faulty or missold, they're not legally obliged to do anything at all - it's at their discretion.

islandofsodor · 28/12/2007 22:58

re the red marks, all my stuff I have bought in the NEXT sale in previous years has this red dot on, but the stuff I bought yesterday doesn't.

LadyOfTheHollyAndTheIvy · 28/12/2007 23:01

Sorry to all Next fans i have offended. I missed the bit about not having a receipt. Sorry, sorry, sorry!

chocolatespiders · 28/12/2007 23:01

they have stopped doing the red dots for sale stuff

XmastimePelvicfloorsandWine · 28/12/2007 23:05

lol LadyofthehollyandIvy
