Council tax debt wage arrestment

Long story short I was paying my council tax a week behind and it was passed to a sheriff's officer (I'm in Scotland). They arrested my wages 300 in December. I contacted them I asked if I could pay via payment plan at a more affordable rate as 300 is a massive chuck out of my wage.

They have rejected every proposal I have offered and have said they won't cancel the wage arrestment unless I agree to a payment plan of same or more value to the deduction.

I don't have a local citizens advice and don't know where to turn for advice.

You can contact citizens advice on the telephone or by web chat if you don't have a local office. Hope you get it sorted

Speak to a debt charity, they'll help you negotiate a more affordable repayment.

Sounds like you have exhausted your options. But it still seems a bit draconian over you being a week behind. If your council tax is split into ten monthly payments can't you use the amount you save in February and March to catch up.

Sorry that should have said a month behind!!

If you get behind the balance becomes immediately due. Can you pay it off now, why were you in arrears?

So the timeline of events in a nutshell

Letter to say I had arrears and now had to pay the full year upfront. Told them that was impossible and they said it would be passed to sheriffs officers.

Sheriff's officers sent me a letter also saying it needed to be paid upfront. Contacted them and they asked me to fill paperwork in to propose a payment plan

Then my wages were arrested 300 contacted them again they asked me to fill the paperwork out again.

They contacted me saying they would not accept this offer.

Contacted them again with the highest amount I could offer.
They emailed me basically saying they will not be removing the earnings arrestment no matter what.

It's all meant to be paid bt the end of this month in Scotland isn't it so you cant have much left to pay?

mayaknew · 20/01/2022 13:41

I've got 400 left to pay they added 150 on to the balance because it got passed to sheriffs officers
