Credit Union Advice - anyone use or used one? How much could I borrow?

I have been a member for 7 months and I have £2000 saved.

I have a car and in March I can take out another car loan and upgrade or pay £4000 to buy the car outright. I am hoping to buy the car and pay the £4000 as mileage is low and will last me a good few years yet.

However due to missed payments due to covid etc and an old default (due to drop off next year) my credit file is listed as poor.

I have £2000 in my savings at credit union and wondering what I would potentially be able to borrow. I will call them of course to ask but just wondering if anyone here has any advice?

@emmabombemmauk I love my credit union. I borrow from them yearly or every few years. I borrow against my savings as I put quite a bit, so I do the secured loan option as the rate is cheaper and also saves me money as I pay off debt. Its nice as the security is against my money and when I finish paying my money is there. Your route would be unsecured which my credit union does also. They would give you a loan and you use part of savings. Worth speaking with them.

I tell my friends to have a credit union account but they don't listen Hmm
