Will Late payment on credit report affect mortgage?

So After two chain collapses and loosing the house we were buying just days before moving and 3 months in a rental waiting for another house to come up. We found it. Offer accepted. Ready to give the broker the go ahead to submit application to Halifax (again) and I thought I would check our credit reports again (it had become and obsession) to my horror my old mobile phone account with tesco was recorded on as being in arrears! I contacted them as this account t was closed last July and apparently I owed them 35 quid. I explained I have had nothing off them to say this or was not told when I phoned them to close the account. I have had nothing of them regarding it at all. They said it had now been sent to a debt collection agency and it is now nothing to do with them! They gave me the details of collection company. I asked if I can pay it and as good will from them have this removed and they agreed so I paid the debt collection company as they requested and now they say they will update the credit company but it will still show as a late payment? I told them the circumstances and said if I had known I owed you money I would have paid it immediately as I have done as soon as I found out. I am so worried this could impact our mortgage lending. I am angry because I don't feel this is my fault? Can I contact anyone to help me with this. It has taken my credit score down tremendously and is still showing as arrears on that account. Which I presume it will until next month now.

Most underwriters will be happy with an explanation for one missed payment.
