Paying in cheque from late grandad

Student133 · 20/02/2021 16:03

Hello,

So I suspect I won't be able to, but before my grandad died he wrote me a cheque for £200 for my birthday, unfortunately due to covid, my banking app being rubbish, and not being speedy, he passed away before I could pay it in. If I can't pay this cheque in I won't be upset, I can keep it as a little momento, but I was wondering if people here knew whether I will automatically not be able to pay in, or if it will be down to individual circumstances of his case, seemed to be fairly conflicting information out there. Thanks!

How old is the cheque?

bathorshower · 20/02/2021 17:49

I'm not sure on the law, in practice, it depends if the bank have been told he's died, and whether it was a joint account (I think, but I'm not certain, that joint accounts become single accounts belonging to the person still alive; they aren't frozen).

You will be able to pay it in but if his bank have been informed he has passed away then it will probably bounce/be returned.

It depends what stage his estate is at. You can still pay it in if it's not at the stage of probabte yet. I'd peak to the will executors to let them know.

Pay it in, it counts as a debt against the estate. Post it, or use the post office if it's one of the banks they cover. If you are in touch with the executors, tell them about it.

What a stage is his estate at?

If the cheque is more than six months old, you have most likely missed the boat. How long have you held into it?

Masterpieceontheshelf · 20/02/2021 19:39

Just pay it in (if it's under 6 months old) and see what happens.

We can't advise other than that because we don't know what his executors have done with his bank account, when you GD died and how old the cheque is.
