Hello all, please can someone explain what it is the government is saying/planning to do about universal credit? Are they stopping the extra money or what? 🤷🏽‍♀️🙄

Ahhh I see. That’s really unfair.

They didn’t put it up because they really cared they put it up because of how much of a pittance it was to start with. Suddenly “hard working” tax payers needed it for the first time. Sadly many will be going nowhere fast in many sectors. But at least they have had nearly a year or no major social unrest while everyone’s been at home.

Food banks are not going be able to pick up much more slack. They could maybe offer it as a £20 benefit advance that you promise pay back interest free when you are back on your feet. Not ideal but better than nothing.

They are not means tested benefits. people can claim DLA and carers allowance and even tax credits' with 100k in the bank !

Something to consider...by putting up the payments, more goes back into the economy through spending. I know some people who saw the increase as a 'windfall' and therefore increased their spending beyond the extra allowance.

There is a good augment that it’s a huge cash investment in the local economy because it is spent immediately. Not put in child saving account for 18y like child benefit. Although yes it’s huge amount over all it’s not going save us much in other areas by not paying it now. Child poverty and adult long term ill health as a result of poverty cost far more.

I think it was daft adding the uplift to everybody on UC. The circumstances of each person on UC could differ greatly. My 18 year old is jobseeking and gets the basic allowance plus the uplift and has no expenses except a £30 phone bill and £80 I take off her UC as a token. The rest she spends on clothes, makeup and takeaways. She doesn’t need the uplift, I imagine there are a lot like her. But a single person with £500 a month rent to pay, bills, food, toiletries etc may find they have to hugely cut down without the extra £80. Especially if they have only been on UC since it came in to force.

Notmoreuodates5 · 20/01/2021 17:48

@whereismormonjesus I agree they should look at circumstances.

Yes same here. My 19 year old ds left college last year and has been doing just part time jobs. He has been topped up by UC which he never would have qualified for under the normal amounts. Like your dd, he has no expenses, i don't even charge him board ( I probably should ), he just saves most of his money. He has started an apprenticeship recently so won't qualify for any UC now, but the point is he has been able to claim it and didn't really need it and during the time he has been topped up by UC he has had very little in the way of any help to look for jobs, and absolutely no checking up that he has applied for any jobs !
