Can he put the bills in my name ?

Ex ( controlling ) moved out of our privately joint rental home 2 months ago & is staying at a mates spare room .
I’m currently furloughed & certainly feeling the crunch . I’ve always paid the full council tax /water bills/phones /food and he the gas & electric & rent . He earns the lions share as a full time worker .
He has suddenly announced that he is to put the gas and electric bill in my name only and shall continue to pay it by sending me £80 a month to cover it and if it is any extra I must pay the difference as it’s myself and our 3 kids living at the house and not him . I’m worried if I don’t agree he’ll refuse to pay the £80 to cover it . He claims he’s going to make the changes as he doesn’t trust me to run up a £1k bill in the gas and electric ?? I’m seriously not the type to take advantage in this way .
Can he do this ? Should I just agree ? Why would he want to do this ? Should i be concern?

I'm not really sure why he's paying your utility bills anyway?
Surely you need to make sure he's paying you the correct amount of child maintenance, and then you take responsibility for paying your own bills?

You can also claim benefits in your own name if your income is low.

nancybotwinbloom · 20/12/2020 20:44

Have you amended your council tax to single living?

Have you applied for csa?

ivykaty44 · 20/12/2020 20:44

Have you told council tax that he is no longer living at the address? And give them the date he moved out and get his name off the bill - give council tax the address where he has moved

You will then get 25%of the council tax bill and it’ll be backdated to the day he left

ivykaty44 · 20/12/2020 20:46

Check entitled to website to see what benefit you maybe able to claim and do so pronto as most benefits aren’t backdated

I’ve only recently told the council about the single occupancy . He says he plans on paying maintenance when the tenancy runs out and I have to find somewhere else for myself and the kids to live in my name only .

Have you told the landlord he no longer lives there and had his nsme taken off the lease.

Ifandbutts · 20/12/2020 20:51

Not yet as I don’t earn enough to stay here in my own name & the ex wants to buy his own house .

Apply for CMS now. They can't backdate it

nancybotwinbloom · 20/12/2020 21:05

It will take weeks to get processed

unicornsarereal72 · 21/12/2020 11:56

Get all the bills in your name. See if you can claim Any benefits. Cancel anything that he should be paying. His phone bill car insurance etc. And phone cms today. Take control of the situation.

That's not his choice.

Claim what you need in benefits and put in a CM claim. None of this waiting for 80 quid a month bollocks.

But yes the bills need to be in your name now.
