Council tax I've overpaid apparently.

Hi I'm so confused. I recently switched to universal credit and had paid my council tax this year I thought already.
I then receive a letter stating I owed £160 and need to pay this at £30 a month.
I phoned up and was told it's a mistake the single person discount hasn't gone on and it will be dealt with.
Fast forward today I've phoned up and she said the single person discount had never been applied to my account I've been overpaying for years and she can see on her side I've got over £1000 to be sent back to me,
and a letter will be sent to me in the next few days and I need to ask for a claim form, but wouldn't give me one now.
I asked her so many times if she was sure and she said yes you are owed this money. But I just can't see how? I don't understand my account either.
It says in credit or debit -£1886. Balance brought forward £182?
Sorry to post this but I'm so confused on how I'm owed money.
For the last five years I've been paying it I've never had none of this said to me so why now?.

If you are entitled to the single person occupancy discount and you haven't been claiming this then as they say, you are owed some money back.

what don't you understand?

Because I remember putting in the paperwork for it around five years ago I'm sure of it . And if I was owed money wouldn't it show on my online account?
This is what it looks like.
Sorry it's just very overwhelming as I've never had money like that just be given to me before and I'm really hoping it isn't a mistake. It would be brilliant.

It looks as though the paperwork you submitted wasn't acted on.

I'd say you're in for a big refund!

Thank you so much my kids are going to be over the moon I can't believe it. I just am in shock as I only found the letter I originally gave them the other day and it's stamped from them. Shock

OP, my council had our council tax band wrong. When I challenged this, I got 8 years of overpayments back! I think it’s your lucky day.

You have to reconfirm your single status each year. This happened to me a few years ago.

RedCatBlueCat · 28/09/2020 20:51

It reads to me like they have credited your account with nearly £1800 of discount, meaning they owe you just over £1600!!!

HattonsMustard · 28/09/2020 20:54

Do you have copies of your old council tax bills? This would show that you have been charged a full occupant charge (2 people over the age of 18) and if a single person discount was applied. Council tax is 50% person and 50% property. Hence why a single person gets 25% reduction.

It can get missed off unless council tax are specifically told and even then occasionally it can be. Although I used to work for "Revenue and Benefits" ie council tax and council tax benefit/housing benefit we were two totally separate departments. We relied on the benefits section informing us of the single status when they applied the benefit. It would trigger a new bill.

Certainly sounds as though it should have been added before. I am not sure what system they use and whether they can print off an older bill for you to show the full charge as the new bill will show the new charge because of the discount.

Thank you all for the help and I do have old copies but it's not stated on any of them about single persons discount I wasn't sure if it was meant to be on there. Could I just call them and ask them to send it to my bank or do I have to wait for the letter to come?.

Hi does anyone know roughly how long till it goes in my bank? I called last Tuesday and she said it would go out with the refunds that night, but I've heard nothing more. Would the weekend count if it was processed Tuesday night?.
