Do I have to pay this energy bill or not?

Hi everyone, when I moved into my new home I was told I'd need to find out who the old energy supplier was. The estate agent asked the previous tenant who never replied but eventually I figured it out.

After reviewing the situation I decided to go with a new supplier. Once I did this the new supplier asked for my serial number from old supplier. I didn't know what it was and couldn't get through to them.

As though reading my mind, my new supplier emailed to say 'don't worry, we will take take care of everything and get it all moved over, you dont need to lift a finger' etc. I was relieved and have paid them monthly.

Now the old supplier is demanding money from me, which means it wasnt deal with and I would ridiculously be paying 2 energy suppliers. What is my position here.

Did you take the meter reading when you first moved in? You would be responsible for energy used from the date you moved in until you started with the new supplier.

P.s. the serial numbers are on the meters

you really need the meter reading from when you moved in and the start meter reading you took for the new supplier. You would be responsible for payment for the energy used between those 2 figures

I did take the reading when I moved in yes. And I took a reading when I moved to new the one. I'll see if I can dig them out.

I couldn't find the serial number! The number on my meter didnt fit the correct format.
