My sisters eldest, 18 is starting at Uni in Feb next year. She is claiming working tax and family credits but the child benefit and tax credits etc., for the 18year old have stopped now as she is 18 and going to Uni. My sister is in a terrible state now as she is 'down' alot of money each month, i think about £120.00 is there anything she can do or is this just what happens when the eldest stops school and goes to Uni?? Any information would be gratefully received.

I dont think there is anything else she can claim, at 18 you are classed as an adult so the government stops any benefits that are child related.

Can her eldest get a part time job so that she can pay her mum board?

Thanks HMO1 - thats true, don't know if she is thinking about that part of it actually, she will be getting a student loan so don't know if there is anything there for living expenses and she does have a waitressing job not sure how much she gets though. So hopefully with the loan there might be something for her mum.

This happened to us too, it's just tough I'm afraid.

Yeah...i suppose it is why alot of eighteen year olds don't actually go to Uni...money worries. So will just tell her to hope her dd gets a good part time job and maybe the grant will help with board etc.,
Thanks everyone
