Roblox - money lost

Hello,
I am sat in tears. not knowing where to turn. I realised today that my 8 year old has been playing Roblox (which I signed her up to do and put all safety blocks on) but has been making in-app purchases which over the last few weeks amount to nearly £2600. She didn't realise it was real money and I consider myself at fault for not checking - with all the child safety blocks on I didn't realise this would happen. I have hardly any money in my account and am not working at present. I have tried Roblox (no way of calling them just have to fill in a form), Apple (as it was on an iPad and they refused to help) and discussed with my bank that suspicious activity should have been picked up - they refused to help and suggested reporting my child for fraud. I appreciate I should have been more vigilant but any ideas or experiences as I simply don't know where to turn. Thank you

Wahooo!! Fabulous.

GrandAltogetherSo · 19/06/2020 13:05

That’s a really good outcome OP. Well done on your persistence. Halo

Also, I’m so glad you posted this as a reminder to keep an eye on children’s gaming accounts.

I imagine that during Lockdown the amount of gaming that children are doing will have increased tenfold, so you can see why Hackers might target these accounts thinking that parents will write off smaller sums without further investigation.

Jocasta2018 · 19/06/2020 13:37

Change all bank cards & passwords. Glad you got a decent result!

BlueWave · 19/06/2020 17:03

Phew!

RandomMess · 19/06/2020 17:23

So pleased, I would be investigating whether identity fraud has occurred as well!

SlightlySleepy · 19/06/2020 17:41

That's such a relief. You must be so happy!!

tribpot · 19/06/2020 19:27

OMG the relief you must be feeling!!! So it sounds as if some of the transactions were your DD but most of them were a hacker? That would certainly explain why the value of transactions seemed incredibly high.

Fantastic outcome OP and yes I agree with RandomMess and others - full security sweep and check that identity fraud hasn't happened.

I read this earlier on in the week, and I was absolutely sick for you - it must’ve been SO much worse for you. I’m just so glad that you’ve got this sorted out, @Sarahr22.

Sarahr22 · 19/06/2020 19:56

Thank you all. Needless to say Friday night is a happy place in our home. Thank you to you all and to this forum - it really helped xx

I have requested refunds from Apple that my kids have made and I have be refunded every time but no more than £30. I suspect apple will ask you to get in touch with the app developer. It's obviously a mistake, I would like to think they would understand.

AMEXY · 21/06/2020 22:36

Would be nice to hear if you get it sorted! Good luck

Mumdiva99 · 21/06/2020 22:39

So pleased you sorted it out.

Sleepingboy · 21/06/2020 22:44

But how did they manage to do that after you knew money had been taken. Didn't you disconnect the payment card from Roblox or the ipad after you discovered all these payments? , Are your card details still in your account on the iPad or phone?

bruffin · 22/06/2020 07:38

Also in the OP you said your dad had been buying things but did know it was real money, how much did she actually spend and how much did the hacker spend?

DomDoesWotHeWants · 22/06/2020 07:57

@bruffin

I'm guessing she was buying with in-game currency.
Extracurricularfatigue · 22/06/2020 09:12

Yes, please make allowances for the clueless among us!

After reading this thread initially (and yay, OP, good news, if I haven't already said it!) I rushed off to check the set up in my own house, as I thought the kids couldn't buy anything but I wasn't 100% sure. My heart almost stopped when I saw $250 in the top right of the screen, and my daughter had to show me that Robux are a totally different thing, and there were none. It's a confusing set up and either a small child or an unfamiliar adult could easily get it wrong!

Dontrainonmyparade · 25/06/2020 21:41

Oh I’m so glad to read this update. I felt terrible for you when I read the OP.

funkylittleboatrace · 03/07/2020 12:05

Ooo OP are you about to be on the radio talking about this with Jeremy Vine?.

Suechildmind · 21/02/2021 15:38

Aghhhhh that's so horrible you don't deserve this pain 😔
