Moving from tax credits to universal credit

Currently receiving child tax credits and there is likely to be a change of circumstances soon which will mean I have to move onto universal credits. I am currently part of a joint claim where my husband works full time but I foresee me having to make a single claim for universal credit due to likely separation.
Does anybody know how the 5 week waiting period works when moving from tax credits to universal credit? I’m really worried that I will get no money for 5 weeks and then a very small payment the following month due to the last payment date of my tax credits overlapping with the universal credit assessment period dates.

As soon as you submit the Uc claim online then tax credits will stop unless the payment has already been released and then it would be classed as an overpayment. There is a 5 week wait for first UC payment but you can take an advance to tide you over which is then paid back over 12 months from your monthly Uc payment.

Thanks babyroobs. I want to try and manage without an advance as I dont want a big deduction every month. It really annoys me that the system is getting poorer people into debt by making them wait 5 weeks and giving them a loan to tide them over.
