Council tax - tenant gone AWOL

My DP is a student so is exempt from council tax, previously he was renting a room in his house to a woman who had the council tax in her name and paid the bill.

About 3 months ago she moved out and is now ignoring my DP, as she owes him some money. However, I have moved in permanently and am concerned that I should now be paying council tax, or we should at least alert the council that the household is no longer entitled to the 25% reduction.

The council won't talk to my DP about it as the account is in her name, but I am now on the electoral roll at this house, so I am worried that she is just not paying it and we'll end up liable. She has a lot of debt and has form for just not paying things.

Does anyone know how we can sort this without her, and whether I would be liable for the council tax from now?

I would send the Council a letter stating the date the person liable moved out and the date you moved in. I can't see that you or your DP would be liable if she owes anything for the period she lived there.

You are liable from the day you moved in.
You must inform them asap. If he is exempt and you are the only adult in the property you will still recieve the 25% reduction.

Dolly is right. The previous tenant isnt liable for the tax now she has moved out. I also read the owner of the property is responsible for ensuring the Council tax is paid by whoever needs to pay it. If your DP is the owner of the house I am surprised the Council wont talk to him.
