Tips on mobile phone insurance claim

Dd lost or had phone stolen last night when she was out. Have blocked it with the Network and going to report it to police this morning but what’s the best approach with the insurance people as I know they are notorious for trying to get out of paying out.
How do you prove such a thing?

Ring them up, explain what happened and they will ask you for whatever details they need to process the claim. Why do you think that you'll need to do anyone other than that? I assume you believe your DD so you tell them the truth.

I was there when the phone went missing but I know that you have to be careful what you say. For example if you left your phone on a table in a public place then they wouldn’t pay out, even if it was unintentional.
Of course they have to be very careful about fraud but this is genuine. She can’t remember exactly when she last had it.

They aren't trying to get out of paying for a genuine theft or loss, they are trying to avoid paying out for someone being careless with something that costs hundreds of pounds. Read the terms and conditions for the insurance and then you'll know whether what happened is covered.

Tamarapudding · 15/12/2019 08:37

That’s the problem though. The terms and conditions are vague and it’s down to interpretation whether you have been careless.
Just wondered if anyone has claimed for a lost/stolen phone and how it went.

I agree it’s hard trying to figure out all the ins and outs of insurance terms and conditions. I claimed once for a mobile that I dropped down the toilet and it was fine but no experience of losing a phone.

How do you prove that you’ve lost something and not been careless? Doesn’t having lost the phone mean that you were careless? I read about someone who left their phone or tablet on a table in an airport and their claim was rejected because it was a public place.
The thing with these types of policies is that they seem marvellous when taking them out but trying to claim is another thing judging by all the complaints online.
Maybe someone who works in the industry might help.

I’ve no doubt that the OP is genuine but is it better to be a bit vague when reporting it?

A lot of insurers won’t pay out if the mobile is lost on licensed premises.

Snowcandle · 15/12/2019 17:23

That’s ridiculous. Just shows you have to read the small print.

Or on public transport.

coconuttelegraph · 15/12/2019 18:18

Just out of interest I've had a look at the conditions of my mobile phone insurance and the definitions of not taking proper care are all reasonable things imo, no blanket clauses about public transport or licenced premises.

What do you mean when you say you were there when in went missing where the circumstances?

I lost my 6 month old iPhone a few years ago, I had a few too many drinks & wasn’t sure where I lost it. Next day I phoned the bars I’d been in but my phone hadn’t been handed in to any of them, I completed a police report on line stating when I last seen it & where it was possibly lost etc, obviously I didn’t mention I was 10 sheets to the wind 🥴. Then called my mobile phone insurer (free with bank account) and told them the same as police report, I had a new phone within a week less £100 excess. I even got an extra £50 from insurer to buy new case & screen protector (still had receipts for everything).

It was very simple & straight forward experience but not something I ever want to do again.

Good luck with your claim.

Snowcandle · 22/12/2019 19:26

How did you get on OP?

Tamarapudding · 22/12/2019 19:43

Hi. Well luckily for us someone handed the phone in at the pub we were at. Very lucky indeed. So we didn’t get as far as starting a claim. Big relief.
