Go see a solicitor and say that you want to change your name. It's a small simple document that they knock up. Shouldn't cost you too much either.

Not sure if there's a DIY home version you can do tho.

You can do it online on the deedpoll website.

RGPargy · 22/08/2007 17:20

Deed poll website? Never knew that existed!

Durdle · 22/08/2007 17:23

Yep. I did my dd on there, paid for it and all the official certificates came through the post a few days later. Very easy.

Could be dangerous if you're drunk and feeling impulsive one day I suppose......

Durdle · 22/08/2007 17:23

its www.ukdps.co.uk (I'm crap at links)

Nymphadora · 22/08/2007 17:27

Thanks would it be weird to do it 6 years after we split up?

I don't think so- its your name, its up to you what it is!

RGPargy · 22/08/2007 17:28

No. Why would you think it's weird?!

The online way is much easier! I changed DS's name to mine when i split with his biological about 15 years ago and back then you had to go via a solicitor!

Nymphadora · 22/08/2007 17:42

Just decided that I don't like being called Mrs X now (I do try and avoid the Mrs but people still use it) I only get called Ms/Mrs X by official people anyway so day to day it wouldn't matter

All a deed poll is is a signed declaration that you are going to cease using one name and start using another. You can type it out on A4, and then send signed copies up to all the relevant bodies - bank/DVLA/passport/GP/NI/inland revenue etc. Don't get conned into paying a solicitor a few hundred quid.

I think you don't even need a deed poll if you are divorced and returning to your maiden name. Just a copy of your divorce papers and a letter to the effect that you want to revert to your maiden name should be enough.

You can visit www.deedpollservice.com for a Deed Poll. At the time of posting this message they only charge £25.

If you are reverting to your maiden name, you only need to send your marriage certificate and decree absolute to government departments, etc and they will change your name back to the one listed on your marriage cert.
