Meeting the DDA as an employer?

Hi all

As you probably are aware (& extremely fed up with) I trying to open a nursery

I want to be as inclusive as possible but I'm having probelms with space.

I really wanted all areas staff use to be downstairs so as to not discrimninate against anyone with limited mobility.

Would it be awful if either the Kitchen or the staff room were upstairs?

WOuld I have to put a stair lift in?

How can I meet the requirements of the DDA (in spirit as well as in law)?

don't know if this helps?

I think that if you are making major alterations to an existing building (change of use etc) then Building Regs now have built into them the adaptations you need to make to comply with the DDA

just found this too

Thanks Betsy - the second document really helped

Apparently if I have no employees, I do not need to make anticipatory adaptations for potential disabled employees.

As long as the public part of the building is accessable then I meet the terms of the DDA.

However if I (in the future) have an employee that needs adaptations then I need to make them

In my case, this means I need to create a stair case that could contain a stair lift - but I don't need to fit a stair lift until (or if) I have an employee who needs one.

The issue of whether or not the kitchen could be upstairs is more complicated as the height of the units is fixed so if I have a kitchen fitted "normally" it would (possibly) preclude a wheelchair user from working in there anyway so the access is less of an issue

SO I am still a little confused - but much less so than when I started this morning
