Married and job seekers allowance

user1497997754 · 09/06/2019 19:46

Hi I have been out of work for 3 months and looking and applying for jobs. My husband works and earns a good salary and quite happy to give me some money to tide me over. This is the first time I have been out of work for about 25 years and am finding it abit demeaning to ask him for money for the basics really. Would I be able to claim job seekers allowance until I find a job even though I am married. I have worked for over 30 years and never claimed anything

Yes you can, also look up marriage tax allowance too so he pays less tax while you're unemployed

My mom tried this a few years back. My dad earns a very poor wage, well under 20k. Her claim was declined. This was a few years ago so things may have changed

Only contribution-based JSA, if you have been paying your contributions for past two years. And I think you will only get that for 26 weeks then it changes to Universal Credit.

You can claim New Style JSA - based on your National Insurance contributions - for 6 months. It's not means tested.

They did get the marriage allowance though

As others have said - you can claim New style JSA based on NI contributions you have paid over the past few years. It can be paid for 26 weeks.

@user1497997754 please can you let me know how you get on...I am in a similar position

haveuheard · 09/06/2019 23:51

I wouldn't bother going to the job centre - they will almost certainly just tell you to claim online.

Also the job centre are likely to give you incorrect advice. Have a look at the link posted above.

Easiest way
Apply for Universal credit on line
You should receive appointment to go to job centre. Take proof of identification & CV
If you have been working previously, you should receive contributions based job seekers for a certain period of time
Each week you will need to prove you are looking for work & attend job centre once a week
Good luck

Not if you want to apply for New Style JSA! It's a separate benefit!
