that's it really. If I'm buying a second hand car, will I need a paper certificate to prove there is an MOT?

TIA

There is a printout thing you are given but it doesn't look like the old MOT certificate.

You can check the status of any car's MOT and tax online if you know the registration number.

AuchAyeTheNo · 25/04/2019 22:25

It’s all digital but you can request a paper copy if you want

mckenzie · 25/04/2019 22:29

thanks both.
I've just tried to buy the tax on line and it's saying that there is no MOT. But the seller assured DH it was taxed!

We've contacted him now and he is adamant it's got an MOT and will check with the people who did it tomorrow and get back to us.

I'm nervous Hmm

Have you bought the car yet?

If you haven't, ask the seller if they mind you taking the car for an MOT before taking it. You should do that anyway. After the past 2 cars I've bought I'm going to do it when getting another one. I dont care if it has an MOT or not.

SammySamSam09 · 25/04/2019 22:34

You can check online if it has an mot.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 25/04/2019 22:36

It’s irrelevant whether it’s taxed or not, he can’t sell you the car with tax. He has to cancel it his end and then you have to buy new tax. He will get a refund of any outstanding tax but you can’t sell cars with tax anymore. It might have had an Mot when he last taxed it but that might have run out now.

mrspitt · 25/04/2019 22:38

You can check on dvla if it's taxed and MOT'd, also lets you see any previous advisories from an MOT and where it's passed & failed. Tax no longer passes on though when you buy a car.

T0astforBreakfast5 · 26/04/2019 00:36

All new owners pay their own tax for each car that they own ( apart from some brand new cars that have zero tax)
You need the vehicle registration document to do this
You can tax the car online

mckenzie · 26/04/2019 07:03

Thank you for all the posts.
I know about car tax not being bought/sold with the car. I was trying to buy the car tax on the DVLA website and entered the code needed from the V5.
That is when I got a message on the screen saying “this car appears to have no MOT and therefore you cannot tax the car”.
The seller (who we know) has promised to get back to us today. He is adamant that the car has an MOT.

If you know the vehicle registration number, then go to www.gov.uk/check-mot-history You can then check yourself about whether the car has a current mot and what the previous mot history is.

mckenzie · 26/04/2019 14:30

thanks Daisy. That website says it's not got an MOT.
I'm leaving it to DH to sort.

I would say it has no MoT. It all digital and done within minutes of the MoT being done. For Example my DH car MoT is due end of March as is his road tax. He was able to insure it the same day as the MoT had been done.

tardyheart · 26/04/2019 15:02

I had my MOT done this week & they give you a print out with a MOT test number in the bottom right corner & any advisories. It does say MOT test certificate on it.

It says on it to go to www.gov.uk/check-mot-history to check it is genuine, and to contact [email protected] if the details are not correct.

If it has failed, you also get a print out which says Refusal of MOT certificate, and a list of defects.

tardyheart · 26/04/2019 15:03

Sorry, cross posted! slow typing.

NT53NJT · 28/04/2019 00:15

You can check the gov website for mot. They are updated within minutes so if it isn't showing as a valid mot then it doesn't have one
