How long will it take for HMRC to refund me?

Was on the phone to HMRC regarding paying too much tax (I was in the wrong tax code) and they said I'd get the money back. Roughly how long will it be and will it be directly into bank account? TIA

If this is to be believed, rather a long time! 12 weeks...

I got mine back in my next month pay.

When I've had this problem before if it was in the same tax year, with the same employer it was refunded in my next months pay.

If I had left the employer or it was for the previous tax year I had to wait for it to be sent out via post/cheque which is usually around July/ August time.

Hahahahaha HMRC such a joke, taken me three months of phone calls and on online complaint then took another 5 weeks so about 17 weeks in total!

Me as well.

I've had it returned the following month in my pay. Although I believe I was taxed on it. Confused

My mom got hers back in her next month's pay

If they write a cheque it's 9 weeks plus, they're painful

I used to work for HMRC, how long is a piece of string? They have reduced staffing levels by so much that it could be ages.

I overpaid tax by around £2k last year and worked it out within around 2 days of the tax year ending. I rang but had to wait until they had done their calculation which is done for everyone at the end of the year. I eventually got the refund confirmed and the cheque issued in October so just over six months later. I kept logging into my tax account and it would just say not yet calculated - was infuriating.

I think it depends upon how you overpaid. DH is a high earner with bonuses so gets any refund back at the end of the tax year after submission of his self assessment. His tax codes regularly changes throughout the year. The refund was into the named bank account within a week of the self assessment submission.

DD and her BF started their first graduate jobs last year, one had no previous income that financial year, the other was working two P/T jobs. They both got adjustments in their first salary after the tax code was adjusted. The refund for the BF came in his salary.
