My daughter left her partner 2 months ago and surrendered the joint tax credit claim. She works part time and has a dd so was told to apply for tax credits which will help towards rent costs. She has just had her award and been told this included her tax credits. She seems to be so much worse off and is beginning to panic. I'm hoping that the lovely folks in my phone can shed some light on this as I haven't got a clue and the staff at local Jc didn't really know
Many thanks

Meant to say apply universal credit not tax credit

Unfortunately everyone I know who has been moved from tax credits to universal credit is worse off, some by hundred and hundreds of pounds a month. Has she got savings that are reducing her award? Over £6k means you'll get barely anything.

Thanks for the reply. She has no savings or anything like that. The system seems to be making it harder for the ones that are trying.

Has your dd also applied for council tax reduction- as this isn’t part of universal credit and will reduce payments. Look on district council website

Firstly she needs to check on her statement that all the elements are correct - things often get missed off. Does she have a standard element, child element and rent element on there/ if the child element is missed off it will affect the rent element also. if she's in private rented accommodation she may not get the full rent element if the rent exceeds the local authority allowance or she has spare bedrooms.

Thanks everyone for the reply's we have finally sorted it. After a call to local council re council reduction they gave her the relevant numbers to query her claim and all has been sorted and claim amended. Thanks again mumsnetters you've been so helpful
