Can you still pay by cheque in shops?

Daft question I know but I live in Germany and haven't paid by cheque for anything for donkeys. I'm going to be shopping in London tomorrow and I've forgotten my payment card PIN, so can I use cheques? Will I still need a PIN? Please humour a dippy old expat and give me the lowdown

dont know about shop-shops but some supermarkets have displayed signs saying they wont accept them..

IdrisTheDragon · 26/06/2007 20:23

A few shops are starting to not accept cheques. I think Boots have/are going to stop and most supermarkets.

spudmasher · 26/06/2007 20:24

OOh! I'm not sure - I got caught in Tesco at Christmas - rather a large bill and the card would not be accepted so I offered to pay with a cheque and I had to back it up with the cheque guarantee card and my driving license!!
It might just be because the card was refused in the first place ....
Anyone else?

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 26/06/2007 20:24

a lot of supermarkets dont. best to ask in shops before you get to the tills

Scoobi6 · 26/06/2007 20:27

I think if you pop into a bank and write yourself a cheque, they will give you the cash, if that helps

franke · 26/06/2007 20:34

Brilliant Scoobi! [lightbulb emoticon]

agree that lots of places are starting not too, I noticed something in Boots recently. I would go into a bank and write a cash cheque and get some cash - take some ID with you, just in case.

the person in front of me in M&S was paying by cheque today..... and taking ages to fill it out etc

i was with my mum and telling her ratehr loudly about this thread on mumsnet

given that all shops need a cheque garantee card... which is a debit card (isnt it?) why not just use the debit card in the 1st place

jinxed · 27/06/2007 17:03

Because NannyL - most people dont get paid til friday and a cheque wont clear before then!

Been there, done that!

LIZS · 27/06/2007 17:04

perhaps they don't have the pin number for that card.

pyjamaqueen · 27/06/2007 17:10

Woman in front of me in Sainsburys paid by cheque today. It took two different people to check it, and they told her they wouldn't be taking cheques from 1st Aug.

NannyL · 27/06/2007 17:11

agh!!! didnt think of that
