How do I bank cheques made payable to my maiden name (which is part of my full legal name)?

My bank a/c name is, let's say, Jane Smith Jones. Maiden name Smith; married name Jones. I only ever use one or the other but my full legal name is Smith Jones.

I used to have a business a/c in the name of Smith, but recently closed it. I now have a number of cheques coming to me via a mobile phone cashback deal, in the name of Smith; under the terms of the deal they can only make the cheques payable to the name the phone was registered under. My new bank says it can only accept cheques made payable to Smith Jones. Is there anything I can do with these Smith cheques??

that is strange, do you have another account you can bank them in?
My landlady's legal first name is different to the name she uses, but her cheques still go in fine in either name.

I think your bank is being tight, the bank cashed a cheque for me in my maiden name a few weeks ago and i habe been married for 4 years, surely if you have proof that you were Jane Smith and are now Jane Smith Jones then they should allow you to use these cheques.

I would expect your bank to accept them although they might ask for a copy of your marriage cert I suppose

Did you try to pay them in or did you just ask the bank?

Have a quite word with your bank manager - show her/him your marriage cert and most will accept it. I once had some 'bits & bobs published under a pseudonim - and the cheques were sent through under that name. I spoke to my bank manager and he was fine.

Thanks all. I just asked the bank - it's an online one. Will try them again.

They don't usually check unless they are for a large amount so I would just try banking them and see what happens

OK will try the cheques when they come! Have also emailed them again. And I still have an old bank account that I hadn't got round to closing, which I've had since before marriage - I think they may accept the cheques.
