Moving from Tax credit to UC

Hi,
When pregnant with dc1 (now 1yo) I was made redundant. So although my dh works money was tight so applied for and was awarded child tax credit.
I'm due dc2 in a few weeks so used the entitledto website to see if our money would go up.
I have discovered that our area went fully universal credit earlier this year so if I notify them of a change I will have to move to uc.

I'm feeling a bit anxious about moving because I read online that once my youngest turns 1 I have to look for work or payments will stop.

Now I have worked all my days until I was made redundant so have no objection to working infact I'd quite like to.
But...
My dh works shifts, rota goes out on a Friday for the following week so for me to work I can only do it if I put a 1&2 Yr old into nursery I've worked out that even if I work full time it wouldn't cover part time nursery for both. We don't have anyone to help with childcare.
So really only way to afford it is to wait til they go to school.

Is it true if claiming uc for child tax credits you have to work before they are school age.
It seems quite harsh since under current child tax credits we get payment based on my dh salary.
We don't get much but what we do get helps massively.
