Tax credits ending mid year

If a partner moved in during the tax year who was a high earner and not entitled to credits meaning mine would end half way through , would the renewal sent out in the April next year mean I would owe loads back from the months in that previous year I claimed as single? Or do they only count the months in that tax year that I wasn't single.
Sorry I don't know how else to explain this question.
Thank you in advance
