DH just had a letter stating he owes tax credit from 2008-2010 over £2k!
He's off work with MH and so we cant afford to pay this!
How do we even know its valid?

It was 10 years ago when he was married to his ex etc & he is rubbish with paperwork.

Shall we just ignore it??

No you can't ignore it unfortunately. He needs to give them a ring and ask for a breakdown and how he owes it first.

Gosh. Contact the CAB, or similar. I thought financial claims lapsed after 6 years, but I could be wrong on this. You definitely need professional advice.

I guess it might not be a debt, as such though... I think any re-payments will have to be affordable e.g. they'd never make you pay it all in one go if you're unemployed.

HMRC don't have the same 6 year cut off date as other 'debts' I had this a few years back and it related to a period 8 years before. I was told unless I could prove it was wrong I had to pay it. They will give you time to pay though.

HMRC and CCJ debts are not subject to the 6 year rule and have to be paid no matter how old they are
