Why would a company which apparently does investments be phoning me?

I got a phone call this morning, which I didn't get to on time. looked up the code, it's the Chester area. I called the number, withholding my own number. It said it was a company called Active Capital. I looked them up on the net and apparently they are an investment company.

Do those type of companies randomly call people up? The number was on my phone yesterday when I got back and then on monday as well, so they are obviously depserate to speak to me.

They may want to get you interested in buying some investments. Or it may be an employee mkaing a personal call from work. I'd suspect the former though if they didn't leave a message.

We get emails of that type from time to time . Maybe they have acquired a contact list form another financial services company.

We've also started getting calls from an investment company this week - four so far (extremely annoying). Perhaps it's just something they've started doing.

I believe cold calling to offer investment opportunities is illegal. For this reason, the callers are often based abroad, we had one the other day from Madrid, and we know someone whose father was arrested for running an operation in Asia. There's a quite good US movie called "Boiler Room" with Ben Affleck on the subject.
