Car Insurance - No claims bonus eh?

Dp has been driving for 4 years now, during this time we have had several different cars and changed insurance provider for each new car, we have never made a claim on our insurance. We have just purchased a new car and are about to get it insured, does anyone know how no claims bonus works, as we have never made a claim but do not have any proof of this, do you build it up with one provider with one car or would we be entitled as he has driven for 4 years without claiming?
He has no idea and people have told us various different things.

Any advice gratefully receieved

Habe you had gaps in your insurance cover (ie when you've had no car?). Your last renewal note should confirm your no claims.

Hi ilovecheese,
Why did you change provider for each car ? Normally you'd simply advise your current insurer you needed to transfer the cover to the new car and you'd only change to a new provider at renewal date, if the company you were with were not competitive.
Unless this new is a 2nd car, in which case you should get credit for the 4 years claims free.
Each company you were with will be able to issue a letter confirming that you were insured with them for a certain period and that you had no claims and if there are no gaps this is essentially a 4 year no claims bonus.

I have never been asked for proof of my no claims. I have my 5 years no claims on despite having a gap of 4 years (said as long as it was no car and not banned it was ok)

I have normally had to provide my new insurer with a copy of my renewal document from previous insurer to prove NC entitlement. I don't think it should matter if you have had a gap as long as the insurance policy was in your name.

Do you not claim 3years no claims at the moment?

The No claims bonus system is for the person buying the insurance policy - i.e. it is relevant to the driver - not car or insurer. It is irrelevant how many cars have been driven or how many insurance companies you have been with.
