AIBU totally annoyed at my DH

Although it was very clear that it was my husbands responsibility to submit our claim to child benefit for our second child (he did for the first), I found out today that he never did it. She’s now nearly two so in essence we’ve missed out on over £1000 of free money. It might be different if we were flush with cash but we really need the money. I’m so pissed. How can he be so irresponsible?! Finally, I’ve filled in the form today and it will be sent off tomorrow once he’s signed. Is anyone else’s husband useless?

If you needed the money so much how did you miss the extra money not coming in?

schoolgaterebel · 21/11/2017 12:28

How did you not notice you we're getting it? You must be pretty flush with money.

ShePersisted · 21/11/2017 12:48

We have separate accounts so I’m not able to see the cash not coming in.

Yes mine. We live in America. He can run $300 million of sales but can't call the tax people for ny state to correct our tax return while he sits on the sofa nursing his sore foot. I have no time to call them during opening hours because I'm working half day today and yesterday because of him and for school meetings he can't go to. I told him I'm not interested in boys. A man would take care of business and call the damn tax people.

ShePersisted · 21/11/2017 13:09

Thanks, that really does make me feel better.

It's a mans way of making sure household admin stays with the wife. Only problem is that it's deeply unattractive to feel put upon. Told DH this morning that he can help with homework, do the Christmas cards and complete the Christmas shopping online over today and tomorrow. Meanwhile because of his foot I'm doing all the standing chores and it's exhausting.

"Free money" Confused

I'm also of the opinion that it can't have been missed much.

Give them a call at Child Benefit OP. I discontinued my claim due to being over the earnings threshold and they told me that I could make a retrospective claim up to 2 years later if our earnings dipped for any reason. Perhaps this will work for you. Nothing ventured nothing gained. Good luck.

Oh, that's great advice, thanks!

From birth you can generally only get three months backdated unfortunately

daytripper28 · 22/04/2018 19:42

Why totally blame your husband? It's just as much your fault.

ExhaustedFather · 23/04/2018 14:31

Is this just a rant or is there a question here?

If someone knows of a way to ensure partners get their act together when it comes to bureaucratic stuff, I'm all ears.

We lost about 10 months worth of childcare vouchers because my wife would just never get her act together and call the *** HR to get and sign the correct form. i had given her all the details about our daughter's nursery (address, bank account, reference codes etc) but it still took her forever. We had massive arguments about it and in the end she only did it because I said: I don't care how much you'll hate me, form now on I'm going to pester you at work every morning and every afternoon of every working day till you do it. I haven't even calculated how much her laziness cost us but it's hundreds of pounds.

PS I usually handle all the bureaucratic stuff, but clearly I couldn't call my wife's HR department on her behalf
