Contract ending and maternity-do I have to take a lump sum?

So my contract is ending in July then I will be on Maternity leave. My company are saying that I have to take all my maternity money in a lump sum, is this the case? As wont I have to pay huge amounts of NI? I know I can claim tax back, and student loan overpayment ( but that wont be until the year end)

can I ask them to do instalments?

Am a bit worried as money will be very tight especially as I have no job to come back to.

As an aside, how do you claim back if you've overpaid NI a couple of months?

You cannot claim back the NI, hence my questions. By my sums they will be taking a huge chunk.
