i have applied for a 'initial credit card' from barclays as we havent ever borrowed before, this is about the 3rd card now, and ive been refused!!

i mean its for people that have NO credit history and are trying to build up their credit - and the reason for refusal - no credit history!! WTF??

i rang my bank Abbey to try and arrange a card with a tiny amount of credit, i got passed from person to person, spent about 40 minutes on the phone, to be eventully put throught to credit card aplications - who can apply but not take into consideration the fact i only want a small amount of credit to build up my history so the result will probably be a refusal because of my zero history!!

why did i just waste 40 minutes of my life???

and to top it all, my mum who is in debt up to her eyeballs has just recieved another big loan into her account!!

so if your in debt you can get into more debt,

and yet if your not and you can actully aford repayments then you cant even get a fecking credit card??

im so pissed off!

i just dont know what to do!! i was sure barclays would approve me as it was a specialist 'first' credit card

so now im basiacally stuffed the loan that were trying to build towards was going to cover some of the wedding(most of it was for home improvements which can wait) but now im worrying because weve payed deposits but i doubt we can scrape the money together without getting the loan i didnt think it would be this hard, all people harp on about is how easy it is to get into debt!! (not that im trying to do that!! just get a few quid)

my mum said stop applying for cards as that looks bad on your application,

but when i first got my credit report it said it was bad that i hadn't applied for any credit in the last 12 months

damned if you do and damned if you dont

im cracking up!!

Are you on the electoral register? If you aren't then you won't get credit.

it is a vicious circle that if you don't have credit you can't get credit cos you don't have credit history! would've thought that if you have a mortgage + bank account this would provide sufficient credit info. I was told once that a good way to start credit history is something like catalogues as they record info on credit reference file but don't require prevoius credit history (if that makes sense)- also my friend was turned by bank they work for credit card for same reason but she ended up getting one from Egg. It is true that the more applications you make it leaves a footprint which does reduce your overall credit score if these applications have been declined. It is strange that you say that you have no applications showing on your file if you have applied for a card with barclays and abbey as this would suggest they have not searched with credit reference agencies. DId they give a reason why your application was declined??

essanel · 17/02/2007 13:30

oops just re-read your op and see they said it was cos no credit history + and that it looked bad that no application for credit in last 12mths - sorry really should read op before typing!

detoxdiva · 17/02/2007 13:45

kittylette - there is a way of checking your credit rating. If you google Experian and CheckMyFile, they are good places to start. At least that way you can find out what's holding you back from getting credit.

Tortington · 17/02/2007 13:52

get creit from a catalogue - anyo ne can get that.

the thing about debt is - if you pay it - you can borrow more.

kittylette · 17/02/2007 14:29

ive got a report from a credit agancy - its down to no credit history im goetting refused

i dont have a mortage, we rent

what i dont understand is that i have an argos card and a vertbaudet account, but these dont appear on any of my reports or history ??

also according to garlik, the place i got my report from im NOT down at this adress on the electoral role,

but when i rang manchester council, they said i AM registered at this adress on the electoral role,

so whats going on there??

OP posts:
misdee · 17/02/2007 14:32

seems you have slipped through. ask to re-register on the role.

RustyBear · 17/02/2007 14:39

Are the credit company using the old electoral register? (new one started December 1st)

misdee · 17/02/2007 14:42

fwiw i cant get much credit as dh went bankrupt a few years ago. i have a cat alogue with £150 limit on it, one credit card and one store card.

basically on those i am trying to rebuild our credit file so eventually if we want to, we can get a mortage (once i am working again)

tiredemma · 17/02/2007 14:44

when did you move into the house? electoral roles are only updated once a yr.

kittylette · 17/02/2007 15:10

we moved in last february,

we enroled in November 06 -ish, and DH is registered here no probelem, yet me on the same form isnt

I'd write back to Equifax and Experian (and the other one) explaining that you are on the electoral roll, and you do have these two other cards.

kittylette · 17/02/2007 15:23

nothings as simple as that though edam,

you have to register with them to 'contact' them, and i cant register because they cant 'verify' who i am, because the adress i live at isnt the one they have me down as living in on their system! - though their system is wrong

[sigh]

Oh blimey, write to the chief executive then - if you can't find the name on their site or via Google check out Companies House (must do something online these days).
