Council tax and Scott and Co

Hi

Can anyone help me? Suddenly I'm in a the middle of situation that I can't see a way out of. Long story because I don't know what is relevant.

A fortnight ago a nice man in a suit appearred on the door step saying he was from Scott and Co collecting unpaid council tax. I confirmed the name and address and all he could confirm that it was in my name. I explained that I rent a flat through an agent and if the tenants owed it always came back to me, so I'd need to check that. And that it couldn't be the address we were standing at because I wasn't on the bills (long story I won't go into but I'm staying off radar for very good very legal reasons). Off he went to fact check and so did I.

I confirmed all the tenants names and mentioned it to my DP. He's an accountant and was totally non pluses expected it to be the tenants.

Anyway back he came tonight threatening arrestment of earnings for over 3k. We've lived in the house just 12 months. The bills are paid quarterly, online. I couldn't produce bank statement because a) there were online and b) I now feel that maybe this bloke shouldn't be seeing this. He swears letters have been sent. Multiple times. To be clear i am a student and in the total time we've lived here I maybe haven't picked up the mail first 3 times. I suspected my partner which is mad because as well as an accountant he's in a well paid job that skipping council tax would be weird. We have multiple payment going out (kitchen, car, credit card) but they are all manageable and upto date.

What is happening? where do I stand? How to i stop this? It can't be identify theft but it feels very weird.

Can someone tell me there's a magic fix? Has anyone else been here?

I'm trying to sound upbeat but I was in tears in front of the kids and now I'm hiding in the loo.

Would the CAB be able to help there, lily?

Have you spoken to the council? Call them.
I called Scott & Co first but they told me to speak to the council and they did sort it and I never heard from Scott & co again.
Even better if you can go to the council tax office on the high street.

ClopySow · 03/10/2016 20:13

Scott and co are fucking awful. They claimed to have sent 3 letters to my work for one of our employees. None of them were received, neither were the letters they claimed to have sent to her home address.

I'd phone their offices to confirm it's legit.

Nonibaloni · 03/10/2016 20:17

Right thanks, great to know that people are understanding, especially about the letter thing. I've not ignored any letters.

Council office first then, I think. Heaven help people who aren't certain about their situation.

Yes you need to see a Money Advisor at the CAB or you could go to the Advice Shop or CHAI

MrsJayy · 04/10/2016 14:23

Scott & co are sheriff's officers have you been paying your council tax I don't understand why you are getting them at your door and no letters you need to check what you have been paying to who

Leatherboundanddown · 06/10/2016 22:51

If you are a student are you not exempt from council tax anyway?

gallicgirl · 07/10/2016 21:55

Only full time students are exempt and they have to provide a certificate from their place of study.

Leatherboundanddown · 09/10/2016 23:25

In the OP it says "I am a student" so just ask the institution for a headed and stamped letter for the council?

starlightgambino · 14/05/2018 09:35

Give these guys a call; www.scottishtrustdeed.co.uk/creditor-details/scott-and-co-scotland/

They helped me resolve an issue with Scott and Co.
