Confused about income tax - am I due some back?

For the past two years I have worked on a casual hours contract earning less than £9k a year.

I have however been charged full tax every month. So for example one month I might earn around £700 yet I'll only bring around £600 home after tax and NI.

My first was on the same contract and has just told me she's never paid a penny tax or NI and as we're both earning under £10k she can't understand why I have!

Also, I've just started a full time, contracted job. 37.5 hours a week - first pay packet was £1050 with no tax taken but NI taken.

What's going on? should I try and claim back the tax I've been paying on my casual hours job or should I have been paying it?

Call HMRC. You could be due a refund for any full tax years when your income was under the threshold (including savings interest etc) as it sounds as if they assumed your income would be that level all year. NI is separate and payable when you earn above £155 per week.
