Debt Free 2007?

Keep thinking about this since yesterday...

Am thinking that my aim for 2007 is to be in a decent(ish) money situation next Christmas BUT I don't wanna take the swing out of the budgie's cage completely...

I need to work out how to save money, pay all the bills, but still be able to have the odd treat here and there.

I thinking:

  • Decent food budgetting/planning
  • uswitch (I think I am on the cheapest anyway)
  • s/o for savings AND a s/o for treats
  • Work out the birthdays that will be coming across the year and make sure I put aside enough each month to cover the hell months.

What else should I be doing?

Bananaknickers have you tried ringing up your bank and explaining your mistake - sometimes they can wave it - generally only if its the first time its happened. I was on the phone to John Lewis credit cards just to check they had received an amount I had paid in to cover a fee that i was charged due to an error when i set up a standing order and they waved the fee voluntairly.

ds waking up must dash ...

nikkie · 15/02/2007 18:12

Oh forgot I pay line rental too £11 + £14 for calls and £12.99 for internet (dial up ) so not that far off the £50

GreedyGecko · 15/02/2007 21:35

Just put the latest payments on my spreadsheet. CCs are now under £8K. Wahoo!

Bananaknickers · 16/02/2007 09:56

Flamesparrow
We did and they said they would like it in writting.so we will get on to that. I must be the only person that rung Telewest and threatened to leave because we couldn't afford it and they told us to maybe go on to dail up and reduce our T. V package. We only have the second one up with Discovery and Animal planet. I like these for the children.

Flamesparrow · 16/02/2007 15:52

Over £250 for the MOT... I didn't think it would be any more than £150 (which I had saved). So much for paying barclays money off the loan

I don't wanna end up with no money when i was with my ex.... scary.

Flamesparrow · 17/02/2007 08:21

Aloveheart · 17/02/2007 13:44

I have been racking my brains on ways to save apart from the obviouse. Still nothing. lol.

nikkie · 17/02/2007 17:37

Have slipped and ordered a takeaway tonight dd2 is ill and I'm missing a noght out so its money I would have spent anyway (isn't it ????? )

pookey · 17/02/2007 19:29

Takeaway here too. I am poorly and dp thinks curry will help [hmm} also the bolognaise I took out of the freezer yesterday didnt defrost in time (apparently). DP is kackered after looking after teething ds while I had a long nap and a lie in . better get off the pc now, I'm very poorly you know.

charliecat · 18/02/2007 10:07

LOL....I spent £8 last night on a take away, the car tax money. 2 7inch pizzas for me and dp and a pitta bread with salad and chips for the kids. With flat pepsi from the fridge...was LOVELY.
I had done dinner but it was awful and none of us ate it
I have also done the FANTASTIC FREEZER IDEA.
Got everything out and put it on a list on the front of the freezer. Can meal plan for the week efoortlessly. And wont waste money on things that are lurking at the back of the freezer.
Whoever suggested that show yourself so I can thank you!

Aloveheart · 18/02/2007 10:43

That's a really good idea cc. didn't offer us any pizza. huh!!! lol

nikkie · 18/02/2007 15:35

We had pizza & pasta!( well I say we , it was more me as dd2 was ill and dd1 was out) Have still got some for tonight too so that my tea sorted and both kidsa are ill now so will be something basic for them.

hecciesmum · 19/02/2007 09:32

Stacey

I have a big bag in my attic with reusable nappies in them which i never used - bought at great expense. They would fit your wee one and i also have some of the plastic over the top things. If you are on a budget and trying to save money on nappies, ythey might help....if you cat me your address i would be happy to send them to you by post.....with one proviso....please pass them on to someone else who needs them once you are finished with them.

let me know if you want them....

Hi girls, hope you dont mind me joining this thread. This month not going well due to bank charges. Think going to follow advice on other thread about claiming them back. How can I get out of debt if bank wont give me loan or overdraft but are happy to slap £35 charges on my account all the time.
Had to borrow £100 from my Mum which makes me cry with shame as should not let things get this bad. DH just ignores the problem and then blames me if it nit getting sorted!!
Some excellent advice on here though. Did Freezer thing and realised actually have a weeks worth of dinners there to be used. Means a week off from spending loads in tesco Its not a bargain if you dont need it is my new motto!
Also got lots of baby clothes and books to stick on ebay.

ska · 19/02/2007 15:47

charliecat I think it was me that suggested the freezer thing. I am most proud of myself as everybody in the family can now get out the thing that is needed and I can meal plan (or more importantly botch something together) at a moments' notice!

MascaraOHara · 19/02/2007 15:52

hello, still being crap here. Feel like giving up. I even keep coming on this thread and reading all the great advice that you guys are giving each other and I have absolutely nothing to add.

Can only put off taxing my car until next week. am 1400 overdrawn and just had to take out 250 to pay childminder, get shopping etc

I ahve made £160 through eBay so will put some more stuff.

Have a chap phoning me tonight about changing my mortgage.

Kaz33 · 19/02/2007 16:18

Well it won't be a debt free 2007 but I have been budgeting - gave myself the target of £600 for all food, nappies, cleaning products etc.. and so far this month have only spent £350 and just went shopping yesterday. Last month scary figure of £850 !!

Persuaded DH that we don't need Sky, though I will miss Sky plus and that has saved another £43.50.

Been doing the washing up as opposed to sticking a tablet in the washing machine.

Haven't done any ebaying yet, but have a draw that needs clearing so will do this week.
